Day 2:  Poas Volcano Tour
Morning visit to Costa Rica's most popular park, Poas Volcano.  The summit of this volcano is reached by a scenic drive, which winds past coffee fields, horticultural gardens, and dairy pastures, with spectacular views back down the valley.

From the parking lot, it is a five minute walk to the Viewing Point.  Weather permitting, you can see inside the active crater from the overlook.  The Botos trail, 0.9 miles (1.4 km) branches off the overlook trail just before the viewing platform and climbs gently to the lake.  Next hike is the Escalonia Cloud Forest Trail, home to epiphytes orchids, ferns, and tropical hummingbirds.  Escalonia Trail 0.6 miles (1km), which begins at the picnic area, provides for a pleasant hike.  The park protects the headwaters of several important rivers, and the dense forests are home to emerald toucanets, coyotes, resplendent quetzals, sooty robins, hummingbirds, frogs, and the Poas squirrel, which is endemic to the volcano.  Cloud forests are like rainforests, but with less rain and more humidity.  The Escalonia Cloud Forest Trail is an excellent route to see all of the birds that live in the park, and the escalonia trees which are easily identified by their unique pagoda shape.

Late afternoon guided walking tour of the City of San Jose.  The dazzling Teatro Nacional graced by Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, is San Jose's most remarkable building.  The nearby Museo del Oro Precolombino, as well as the Museo de Jade are also major attractions.

Nightlife Walk
Enjoy the forest at night.  During this night hike through Monteverde's Cloud Forest, you will have the opportunity to observe a large variety of wildlife.  Sunset is the perfect moment to hear all of the sounds of nature.  Diurnal animals take refuge for the night and the nocturnal animals begin their activity.  This may be a completely new experience, since at night the forest is filled with species very different than those you can observe during daylight.  Some of the most common animals in the evening are tarantulas, silver fox, frogs, coatimundi, a variety of insects, and some sleeping birds.

Along the way, the local naturalist guide will explain about different ways of life which will help you to appreciate the fascinating creatures which inhabit the forest after night falls., allowing you to discover a whole new facet of animal life in Costa Rica.

Day 10:  Nicaragua's Big Lakes, Great Volcanoes, and Charming People
A little history:  On his fourth voyage, Columbus explored the Miskito Coast on the Atlantic side of Nicaragua.  The Spanish then returned to the western part of what became known as Nicaragua and encountered the three most populous indigenous tribes of people in the land:  the tribe led by Nicaragua, the indigenous chieftain, Nicaragua is truly named after, but was erroneously thought to be Nicarao, the chief of another group of indigenous peoples, and Diriangen, the chieftain of a group of indigenous peoples living in central Nicaragua.

Early transfer to Nicaragua about four hours to the border at Peñas Blancas (same name on both sides of the border), then one hour to the Ferry Station.  About 90 minute Ferry ride to Ometepe.

Box-Breakfast and Dinner
Overnight:  Homestays for two nights.
Our Homestay is a way of giving back to this community.  This is the organization that makes the arrangements:  http://www.planeterra.org/nicaragua-community-development-projects--mif--projects-80-php

Day 11:  Ometepe
Ometepe, an island composted of two volcanoes, emerges from the Cociboica, the great Lake of Nicaragua.  Joined by a thin, flat isthmus the two volcanoes shape the island like an hour glass.

Over the northern half of Ometepe looms the Concepcion, a majestic and perfectly cone-shaped active volcano, while the southern half is dominated by the extinct volcano Maderas which is swathed in a cloud forest and has a mist-shrouded lagoon in its crater.

Day 12:  Leon
Intensely political, buzzing with energy and at times, drop-dead gorgeous (in a crumbling, colonial kind of way), Leon is what Managua should be...a city of awe-inspiring churches, fabulous art collections, stunning streetscapes, cosmopolitan eateries, fiery intellectualism, and all-week, walk-everywhere, happening nightlife.  Many people fall in love with Granada, but most of them leave their hearts in Leon.

Ninety minute ferry transfer to San Jorge.  About four hours drive to Leon.

It is one of the largest pre-hispanic ruins in El Salvador and was a regional capital during the late Classic Period.

Tazumal: Archaeological investigations indicate that Tazumal was inhabited from the Classic period through to the Postclassic and that the site had links as far afield as central Mexico, the northern Yucatán Peninsula and lower Central America. Metal artefacts from the complex date to the 8th century AD and are among the earliest metal artefacts reported from Mesoamerica.

Joyas de Ceren: Joya de Cerén was a pre-Hispanic farming community that, like Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy, was buried under an eruption of the Laguna Caldera volcano c. AD 600.
